Chapter Fourteen

The next morning, we rose and repacked to leave the cave. I couldn’t believe my luck when Grim found a small ledge that curved through the waterfall and along the cliff all the way to the river bank. We could walk along it and only get minimally wet from the edge of the waterfall. I was ecstatic to not have to swim in the river again.

“Do you know the way?” Neera asked me.

I tied my hair in a braid to hang over my shoulder as I replied, “I do. Like I said before, to me, it feels like yesterday that I was queen. I remember the way. Tritus and I traveled to the mountains regularly for some reason or another. You’ll know The Black Mountain when you see it. It’s the biggest of them all.”

“Well, I don’t doubt that.” Leo threw his hands in the air. “As hard as everything has been so far, why would this be any different, aye?”

We moved forward into the woods, staying off the paths and roads and hidden in the deep foliage. It took us three days to find the end of the woods and have sight of the mountains. It was a clear and open valley that loomed in front of the mountains.

“I’m betting I can point out The Black Mountain,” Leo said, “Who wants to wager?”

The Black Mountain loomed far above the others. About halfway up was a span of craggy rocks with three black holes that made it appear to be a human skull. I knew Dagto made his home in those holes. They were caves in the mountain.

“I don’t like being out in this clearing,” Grim said. “It’ll be too easy to spot us if they send spies in the sky. Is there another way to reach the mountain?”

“Only if you want to go over many mountains to get to it. It would add weeks to our walk that way.”

“Alright,” he sighed. “Through the valley we go. Looks like about a two-day walk normally. We will need to make haste to try and avoid detection. Sprint across as much as we can. Maybe we can make it in a day then.”

“Well, we aren’t making any progress standing around, are we?” Leo said and took off running through the clearing.

We all followed him. We ran and ran. Sprinted, then slowed and walked until we rebuilt enough stamina to run again. By nightfall, we were very close to the mountain.

“Let’s keep going,” Grim said. “We can make to the mountain in a couple of hours if we keep up this pace. Then we can find somewhere with cover for the night.”

Neera groaned through her panting, but we set off again. Almost three hours later we were standing around the base of the mountain.

It was heavily wooded and easy to find a private place out of sight to spend the night. Grim and Leo even made a small fire before they left to hunt small game.

Neera and I were huddled by the fire for warmth when she said, “What’s going on between you and Grim?”

I was shocked by this.
